  What is Shotokan Karate?

Like most styles of Karate it has it's origins in Okinawa before it entered Japan by it's founder Gichin Funakoshi; who's known as the father of modern day Karate.

What does this mean for you?  The Japanese are notorious for perfection and that is carried into Shotokan.  It's the worlds most powerful striking art.  We have a saying "Ikken Hissatsu" which means in laymen's terms "One and done".  We teach how to deescalate and to avoid fighting.  However if we're forced into a self-defense situation we should try to end it quickly and effectively.  To need as few strikes as possible, and even when we block an attack to be able to block it as hard as we have to.

Because in Shotokan a strong enough block can be an effective strike.
